By Maverick Anterobang, owner

It happens to everybody: groceries in one hand, phone in the other, and the door shuts with the keys on the seat. Before you panic, run through this list.

1. If a child or pet is inside, call 911 now

This comes first, every time. In the Texas sun, the inside of a closed car heats up fast. Temperatures can climb about 20 degrees in just 10 minutes, even on a mild day. If a child or animal is locked inside, call 911 immediately. Don't wait for a locksmith or tow truck.

2. Check every door and the trunk

It sounds obvious, but people skip it when they're stressed. Try every door, the rear hatch, and the trunk. On some cars, the trunk has a separate lock or a fold-down rear seat you can reach through.

3. Try your phone

Many newer vehicles can be unlocked from the manufacturer's app, such as FordPass, myChevrolet, Toyota, Honda, or Hyundai's apps. If you've set one up, this might solve it in seconds. Some roadside programs can also unlock connected cars remotely.

4. Find a spare key

Is a spare at home? Can someone bring it? If you're in a neighborhood like Bridgeland or Towne Lake and a family member is nearby, that may be the quickest fix.

5. Don't break in yourself

Coat hangers, slim jims, and wedges look easy in movies. On modern cars they can:

A professional lockout costs a lot less than a new window or door repair.

What to expect when you call for a lockout

Lost keys, not locked keys?

If your keys are actually gone, a lockout won't help you drive away. Modern keys and fobs have to be programmed. We can tow your car to a dealer or locksmith who can cut and program a new one.
